Bushnell ARES 5 inch Compact Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope
The Bushnell ARES 5" Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope 785000 is available exclusively from the online store - Optics Planet! The Bushnell Compact ARES 5 Dobsonian Telescope is a simple, easy to use, non-technical telescope that is still large enough to provide real performance. The 130mm reflector, 650mm focal length is large enough to take this telescope out of the toy category, and is rapidly becoming the standard for a beginner's telescope in terms of size. Bushnell DOB5 Compact Telescope features a true parabolic mirror design that allows the telescope's optics to be collimated with a standard collimating eyepiece. The circle on the center of the mirror also allows the use of a laser collimator.
The Bushnell ARES Telescope series is named for NASA's Ares rocket. The ARES rocket, itself named for the Greek god associated with the planet Mars, will some day return humans to the moon and eventually take them to Mars and further on into the solar system.
Truss tube design of this Bushnell telescope keeps the overall size super portable and provides features only found on high end, expensive Dobsonian telescope models. The truss-support concept allows the optical tube's front and back cells to collapse together, while aligning on the truss support rods, and can be locked down for an easier and more secure way to transport the telescope. This one piece, low hassle OTA design is mechanically simple and results in a telescope that can be handled with ease and transported by just one individual.
The Bushnell DOB 5 130mm Dobsonian mount features friction bearings on the altitude and the azimuth, that make for a more user friendly telescope mount than the ball bearing setups used on many other Dobsonian telescopes. The telescope stops dead in its tracks when you remove your hand and does not continue moving as happens with ball bearing designs. The carry handle is convenient in keeping with the portable design of this Bushnell telescope. Bushnell DOB-5 Dobsonian Telescope 130 mm Newtonian Reflector 78-5000 comes with two 1.25" telescope eyepieces: 10mm SPL10 and 25mm SPL25, and includes a red dot finder scope.
Now for a real piece of astronomy equipment from our friends at Unihedron!
Unihedron Sky Quality Meter
Just how good are the skies at your observing site? Are some times better than others? Are you fighting light pollution in your community and need ammunition? Find out the answers to these questions and more with the Unihedron Sky Quality Meter!
The Unihedron SQM Measures the brightness of the sky in magnitudes per square arcsecond. CCD users can make a correlation between the Unihedron SQM reading and when the background reaches some ADC level.
Uses: Find out how good the night or site REALLY is. Compare the sky brightness at different sites quantitatively. Document the evolution of light pollution in your area. Set planetarium dome illumination to mimic the skies people are likely to experience elsewhere in the city. Monitor sky brightness through the night, night-to-night, and year-to-year. Determine which nights show the greatest promise for finding the 'faintest fuzzies'! Calibrate the effect of sky brightness on qualitative measures such as the Bortle Scale. Investigate how sky brightness correlates with the solar cycle and month-to-month sunspot activity. Help provide local ground truth for future sky brightness prediction with the Clear Sky Clock.
Features: Audible signal while measurement is in progress. Sky brightness displayed in visual magnitudes per square arcsecond. Infrared blocking filter restricts measurement to visual bandpass. Temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit as well as model number and serial number can be displayed with different button press sequence. Precision readings at even the darkest sites. Power-saving features designed in for maximum battery life. Reverse battery protection.
Specifications: Operates from 9V battery (included). Size: 3.8" x 2.4" x 1" Maximum light sampling time: 80 seconds
Here's another great donation from the good folks at Hands On Optics!
Celestron 1.25" OIII Filter
The OIII narrowband filter isolates just the two doubly-ionized oxygen lines (496 and 501nm lines) emitted by planetary and emission nebulae, while blocking the rest of the overall spectrum of light. The result is extreme contrast between the black sky background and the faint photons of OIII light needed for detailed views of the Veil, Ring, Dumbbell, Crescent and Orion nebulae, among other objects.
Each filter has an ultra hard, vacuum-deposited coating carefully designed to block all of the visual spectrum ranging from 400 to 700 nm This eliminates the un-natural colored halos surrounding bright stars common with O III filters of less sophisticated coating technology.
Let's not forget the young folks, either! Thanks to our good friends and supporters at OPT we have even more to give away! Check this out...

We believe these are the highest-quality binoculars you will find for less than $100. Includes the finest BAK4 prisms and is fully broadband multi-coated throughout. The bright, wide 6° field of view makes these ideal for binocular astronomy. Our 56mm objectives gather 25% more light than 50mm binoculars (surface area = pi*r2). They are also excellent for general daylight usage, birding, and nautical applications. Both models offer a steady view without a tripod, but of course the 8x model is easiest to hand-hold.
The high degree of eye relief and fold-down eyecups makes these models a great choice for those that wear eyeglasses. Heavily rubber-armored metal body, with brass 1/4-20 tripod adapter threading. Also includes right ocular diopter adjustment, Fujinon-style soft rubber ocular cover, attached soft rubber objective covers, rugged nylon case, and our premium heavy-duty strap.
Next up... our appreciation goes to the one and only Howie Glatter for his exceptional donation!
Howie Glatter 1.25" TuBLUG Newtonian Laser Collimator Accessory
When it comes to lasers and collimation, one of the most trusted names in the business is guru Howie Glatter. His uncompromising quality and dedication to above average products, not only put his name above the rest - but in demand as the finest available on today's market. Usually a manufacturer doesn't take the time to explain to a customer exactly why their product excels over others - or why it performs better - but not H5owie. Here's what he has to say about his new Howie Glatter 1.2" TuBLUG Newtonian Laser Collimator Accessory.
"The Blug is my newest Newtonian collimation accessory (Blug is short for Barlowed collimation plug). The Blug is used together with a regular laser collimator in single beam mode to perform Barlowed laser Newtonian primary mirror alignment. The Blug does not attach to the collimator like my regular self-Barlow attachment. It is inserted in the inner end of the focuser drawtube, inside the tube or upper cage, and it is retained by an O-ring in the Blug base. It has a matte-white 45 degree face as a screen, and a small anti-reflection coated Barlow lens mounted in a central axial hole.
On a truss tube dob, the 45 degree face of the Blug is easily visible from primary adjustment position. You watch the target shadow move on the Blug face as you turn the primary adjustment screws. With a solid tube scope, the Blug can be turned 180 degrees to face the front, and the target shadow will be seen easily from the front of the scope. I supply a shim kit with the Blug for use if the drawtube inner end is larger than the eyepiece nominal size. The plastic shim strips can be inserted under the o-ring, and in this way drawtubes as much as 1/10" oversize can be accommodated. The Blug extends 3/8" into the back end of the drawtube, so the laser collimator in the eyepiece position must not extend forward far enough to interfere with the Blug, or it will not seat properly. After the secondary mirror angular alignment is adjusted with the single beam laser collimator, just insert the Blug into the back end of the drawtube, and adjust the primary mirror alignment to center the collimation target shadow on the Blug face."
Easy... Precise... And Accurate. What more could you ask?
Now, let's thank our friends at Scope City for the donation of $50 worth of gift certificates!
Next up.... Our appreciation goes to Vixen Optics!

Orion ShortTube 80-T Refractor Telescope
The popular "little telescope that could" is now even better. The wide-field refractor that novices appreciate for its ease of use and big-scope owners value as a take-anywhere second scope now has fully multi-coated optics and comes with its own padded carrying case. Its 80mm achromatic objective lens, short tube 400mm focal length (f/5.0), correct-image diagonal (1.25") and 6x26 correct-image finder scope make the ST80-T perfect for casual stargazing or terrestrial viewing. The short focal length means you?ll see a beautifully wide field of view. And like all refractor telescopes, the unobstructed light path means sharper images with better definition and contrast.
Despite its diminutive size ? it?s only 15-1/2" long ? this telescope delivers the goods. And it?s so portable you will be able to take it virtually anywhere. It comes equipped with a 1.25" cast-aluminum rack-and-pinion focuser and two interchangeable Sirius Plossl telescope eyepieces ? 25mm (16x) and 10mm (40x). Easily attaches to Orion equatorial mounts or photo tripods.
Orion Telescope and Toe-Saver Safety Lights
Ink-black darkness is exactly what we amateur astronomers are after for observing with a telescope and astrophotography sessions. It's hard to imagine any amateur astronomer complaining about it being "too dark" in the field. The only exception would be immediately after a, shall we say, painful and abrupt meeting between a telescope tripod leg and your toes. After such a stubbing experience, you probably wished you had some way of knowing exactly where your astronomy equipment was, without disrupting your dark-adapted vision. Wish no longer. Orion Telescope and Toe-Saver Safety Lights can help you prevent accidental bumps in the dark by virtue of three lengths of flexible red electroluminescent wire which can be wrapped around each telescope tripod leg so you always know where to wander without endangering your toes or knocking your telescope out of alignment.
Orion Telescope and Toe-Saver Safety Lights can help you avoid the worst case scenario of potentially knocking over your treasured telescope. During star parties or group observing sessions, our Safety Lights will help make sure you and others avoid potentially painful ? and costly! ? bumps, trips, and knock-downs in the dark. The handy included control box lets you adjust the red light brightness to easily see where your astronomy gear is without disrupting your dark-adapted vision. The control box also allows you to choose between constant illumination or flash settings. The flash setting is useful if you prefer the safety lights to blink periodically during use. Three lengths of red electroluminescent wire are included to fit any tripod, and 4 hook and loop fasteners let you secure the lights in-place where you want them. Requires 9-volt battery (not included).
Orion StarShoot Video Eyepiece
Have you ever wanted to share the enjoyable view seen through your telescope with a few friends or family members? Well, now you can do just that with the innovative and affordable Orion StarShoot Video Eyepiece. Now you can easily view what you see in your telescope on your TV screen or camcorder! The Video eyepiece sends live images of the Moon, bright planets, Sun (solar filter required), and terrestrial subjects as seen through the telescope to a TV set, camcorder, or any other device with an RCA video input. Now the whole family, classroom, or astronomical society can enjoy the view right along with you, as if you were all looking through the same telescope. The StarShoot Video eyepiece is compatible with any telescope equipped with a 1.25" focuser, or a 2" focuser with a 2"-to- 1.25" step-down adapter. While a telescope attached to a tracking motor-equipped mount will provide the best results for nighttime use, even non-motorized telescopes like Dobsonian reflectors work well with this petite performer. During daylight hours, the StarShoot Video Eyepiece can add crowd-pleasing performance to any telescope outfitted for terrestrial use. Telescopic views of birds, wildlife, and scenery can be seen and enjoyed on your TV screen.
This handy video "eyepiece" imager provides an inexpensive entry into the rewarding realm of astrophotography. The StarShoot Video Eyepiece features a CMOS sensor chip with 8-bit output and RGB 24-bit color resolution. The sensor?s small 9.2µm x 7.2µm pixel size accurately detects fine details. While not sensitive enough to capture images of faint deep space objects, the Video Eyepiece enables you to share telescopic views of brighter objects within our solar system like the Moon and brighter planets like Jupiter and Saturn. The view transmitted by the StarShoot Video Eyepiece is comparable to what you would see using a 5mm eyepiece. The 1.25" nosepiece is threaded for use with any Orion 1.25" eyepiece filter, so you can enhance your view to your liking by using a Moon filter, light pollution filter, color planetary filters, and more (filters sold separately). You can also use our StarShoot 0.5x Focal Reducer (sold separately) if you?d like to view a wider area. The StarShoot Video Eyepiece is powered by the included AC-to-DC adapter, which has a long 70" cable for convenient use with your telescope. With an Orion StarShoot Video Eyepiece you can start enjoying the night sky and daytime terrestrial views through your TV!

Orion StarShoot USB Eyepiece
With Orion's StarShoot USB Eyepiece, you can easily view what you see in your telescope on your laptop or desktop PC! The USB eyepiece transmits live images of the Moon, bright planets, Sun (solar filter required), and terrestrial subjects as seen through the telescope to your laptop or desktop PC. Now the whole family, classroom, or astronomical society can enjoy the view right along with you, as if you were all looking through the same telescope.
The Orion StarShoot USB eyepiece fits in any telescope with a 1.25-inch focuser, or a 2"-to- 1.25" step-down adapter. While a telescope attached to a mount equipped with a tracking motor will provide the best results for nighttime use, even non-motorized telescopes like Dobsonian reflectors work well with this petite performer. During daylight hours, the USB eyepiece can add crowd-pleasing performance to any telescope outfitted for terrestrial use. Telescopic views of birds, wildlife, and scenery can be seen and enjoyed on your laptop or desktop PC screen.
This nifty "eyepiece" imager provides an inexpensive entry into the rewarding realm of astro-imaging. The Orion StarShoot USB Eyepiece features a CMOS sensor chip with 8-bit output and RGB 24-bit color resolution. While not sensitive enough to capture images of faint deep space objects, the USB eyepiece enables you to share telescopic views of brighter objects within our solar system like the Moon and brighter planets. The view through a StarShoot USB Eyepiece is comparable to what you would see through a visual eyepiece with a 2.20-degree true field-of-view, which is like viewing with a 3.8mm eyepiece and 2x Barlow lens combination. The 1.25-inch nosepiece is threaded for use with any Orion 1.25-inch eyepiece filter, so you can enhance the view to your liking by using a Moon filter, light pollution filter, color planetary filters, and more.
The included Orion AmCap movie capture software allows you to save and process the views transmitted through the eyepiece. The StarShoot USB Eyepiece can capture up to 24 frames per second at its native resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Progressive scan imaging means information from each and every pixel is delivered to your computer for each frame. The color CMOS sensor features small 5.6µ x 5.6µ pixels for great resolution on bright targets. All power is supplied to the StarShoot USB Eyepiece through its USB connection to your computer. Imagine sharing your videos with You Tube or Facebook!

Meade ETX-80AT Backpack Version Telescope
The Meade ETX-80AT Backpack Version Telescope. It's onboard computer knows the night sky. After a short alignment procedure, your telescope will be ready to take you on a tour of the universe. You will see more objects in one night than Galileo saw in a lifetime. See planets like Saturn and Jupiter, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies and more.
In addition to the exceptional features of the Meade ETX-80AT, the ETX-80AT-TC BB model includes a dew shield, slightly lighter field tripod with bubble level indicator and special edition Meade durable backpack. The Meade ETX80AT also includes a 9.7mm and 26mm Plössl eyepiece, a built-in Barlow lens, which doubles the power of any eyepiece you place into the focuser, a compass and an erecting prism. The computer control panel of the #494 AutoStar features an auxiliary input port and on/off LED, a built-in timer and a reminder alarm for use with astrophotography applications.
The new, larger aperture Meade ETX-80AT-TC with built-in Barlow lens is a powerful companion for exploring the universe at an incredibly attractive price. For the casual observer interested in viewing the Moon, planets, bright deep-sky objects, and terrestrial landmarks, the Meade ETX-80AT-TC may be the perfect instrument. The #494 AutoStar computer system with integrated, factory-calibrated time chip, permits the automatic location of over 1400 celestial objects. Just enter the object you wish to observe onto the AutoStar display, and press GO TO.
Autostar's celestial object database includes more than 1400 astronomical objects, any of which may be entered on to the Autostar display; alternately, the Right Ascension and Declination of any object in the sky may be input to the Autostar display. In either case when the observer presses GO TO, the telescope automatically moves to the object at 4.5°/sec. on both telescope axes, and places the object in the telescopic field of view. Autostar's database for Meade DS-2000 telescopes includes the following celestial objects: 66 named objects (e.g., the Orion Nebula), 74 galaxies, 31 diffuse nebulae, 19 planetary nebulae, 135 star clusters, 109 objects from the Caldwell Catalog of the best objects for small telescopes, 110 Messier (M) objects; the complete Messier catalog, 943 stars from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) catalog, including 395 double stars, 189 variable stars, and other stars of special note, 50 Earth-orbiting satellites, 26 asteroids, including all of the brightest asteroids, 15 periodic comets, 8 major planets, from Mercury to Pluto for 1586 objects, total!
Additional Capabilities of the Meade AutoStar...
Beyond the location of database objects, Autostar allows for a wide range of important...indeed revolutionary...telescope capabilities: Automatic GO TO capability to any astronomical object of known coordinates (RA and Dec.). Enter an object's coordinates to the Autostar display, press GO TO, and Autostar moves the telescope to locate the object and place it in the telescopic field. Digital Readouts of telescope position, continuously in RA and Dec. Precise sidereal-rate tracking. Once Autostar locates an object, it directs the telescope to track the object automatically on both telescope axes, simultaneously, keeping the object centered in the field. 9-Speed Dual-Axis Operation. Use Autostar's pushbuttons to move the telescope on either or both axes, simultaneously, at any of nine drive speeds, from very slow 2x sidereal to fast 4.5°/second. GO TO capability to any of 200 user-defined objects. Use the Meade AutoStar Suite software, included with every new DS telescope, on your PC to GO TO any object on the PC display at a click of the mouse. (Requires optional #506 Connector Cable Set). Plus, over 20 other menu options, including guided tours of the best objects observable on any specified date; major event menus; utility functions (e.g., timer, alarm, eyepiece power calculations); and much more. For the beginning or intermediate observer the Meade Autostar is a revelation that permits the observation of hundreds of objects the very first night out. And, with its wide-ranging capabilities, Autostar is a valuable tool in the hands of the most experienced observer as well. Besides that, this little telescope is FUN! (and I oughta' know... I wore one completely out! ;)
