"Astro-Imaging As Art" by Warren Keller

Says Warren: "And it is art. Like any other medium, astrophotography should respect basic rules. Elements such as composition and color matter. For a visually pleasing final product with lots of impact, thought is required beforehand to match the object to the imaging focal length and chip size.

A slice of nebula or an off-center galaxy doesn't make the same statement as the full object, well-composed and contrasted by a dark background. There are some imagers who approach the hobby from a technical background and lack education in the arts. Though the image may be well acquired, poor composition, unnatural colors and less than ideal processing are sometimes the result.

I'd suggest studying the work of great astro-imagers, and also landscape painters and photographers as well. See why an extra few minutes framing a shot is worth the time. Get a sense of what is considered tasteful and pleasing, to avoid crossing the line into the artificial or garish."

IP4AP "Image Processing For Astrophotography" was created for Astrophotographers of all skill levels. There are many resources for learning Image Processing, but we believe these techniques are best taught - Visually! Let us be your guide to the easy and fun way to learn the most sought after techniques in Astro-Imaging.

Unleash the power of Adobe Photoshop on your Astro-Images! You've made a large investment in equipment - Now make a small one and learn the secrets of producing stunning Astrophotographs!

Make and Take Solar Filter Workshop

Do you have a Baader Solar Filter for your telescope or binoculars? If you don't, why not stop by our "Make and Take Solar Filter Workshop" and create one! Baader Planetarium's AstroSolarTM safety film is a specially manufactured streak- and blister-free foil. It attains the optical performance of planeparallel glass filters. The base material is not "Mylar"! The basic development of this film was made in laboratories for nuclear- and particle physics. High density coatings on both sides of the foil ensures a highly uniform filtering, while neutralizing the occasional miscroscopic holes in the coating. The image of the sun is extremely contrasty and of almost neutral colour. The coating of the foil is subject to constant quality control. Its reflective property has been tested by a German Republic bureau of standards and conformity and is certified with the CE-symbol. All we ask is a $5 donation to cover the costs of the materials. The filter is yours to keep!
